Three major news events. Many lives taken over a very short span of time. First Christina Grimmie from The Voice shot after her concert on Friday night. Then early Sunday morning 49 deaths and more than 50 injuries from a crazed man at a popular gay nightclub. Then yesterday, a two year old torn from his father’s hands by an alligator at a popular Disney hotel. How much more, God?
Anger. Fear. Paranoia. Watchfulness. Tears. Overwhelming sorrow for a city. The City Beautiful. Home of the “Happiest Place on Earth”. Yet just walking in Walmart yesterday caused my heart to tremble as I wondered about my personal safety. September 11th and my awareness of one of the planes flying over the city I lived near in NY came back to me.
It was odd to be asked by Facebook if I was okay as it contacted all Facebook members in Orlando. My friends would not even question my safety. They would know me and who I am. I was safe asleep in my bed with my husband. I checked that I was okay, but it almost felt wrong to check in. I felt it was making light of a horrific time, but saying to all my FB friends, “I am safe.” , when so many people were hurting.
Orlando Strong signs are showing up everywhere as the people in this large city want to help. Our doctors office has had people showing up to find out what blood type they have so they can donate. Several neighbors know victims or friends of some of the victims. Our churches are stepping up and having prayer vigils, offering help with funerals, offering counseling. We are weeping together.
May God’s mercy and love shine through us. May we bring hope. May God heal the broken hearts in each situation.
